Choosing the right contractor can be time consuming and stressful. It is a major decision that has two chief considerations: one, financial and two, peace of mind. The ideal contractor will give you full value for your hard-earned dollars; a home that is well built; completed on time and on budget by a professional that you feel comfortable with.
Building a house well takes experience and qualification. Ask your contractor how long they’ve been in the business and the types of building that they’ve completed. It is also important to ask your contractor what qualifications they have, and what qualifications their workers have. Remember to ask your contractor for references. A great contractor is proud of his or her work, and would be pleased to have you talk to others who can vouch for them! You can also ask to tour a current worksite, for firsthand experience of the care the contractor takes in his or her work.
Completing a house on time and on budget requires planning and productivity. Review your contract with your contractor carefully. Ask your contractor to clarify anything that you need more information about. Remember to define the process by which upgrades and customizations occur, including time and budget changes. Be sure to have a clear, detailed payment and completion schedule. As a special note about budgeting, remember the old proverb, ‘you get what you pay for’? This can be especially true when hiring a contractor. The lowest price is not always the cheapest in the long run. Quality work done right the first time is a worthwhile investment.

Talk about some of your needs and concerns in regards to building your home; does the contractor demonstrate that they understand these? Ask your contractor what his or her professional memberships and licenses are, and be sure to ask to see them.
